2020.09.20 16:36 selfproclaimed Featured Character/Team Schedule for Q4 2020

This is the official schedule for the Features from now until the end of December. Sign-ups for the session after that will be posted within the first two weeks of December.
If you've been following the series for a while, you may notice that our schedule has changed. Over time it's been harder and harder to fill the schedule slots due to the dwindling number of submissions we've been receiving for Featured Teams. As such, we've made a decision to move Featured Teams from a biweekly event back to a monthly one, harkening back to their precursor, "Team of the Month".
As a result, you may have had a team you submitted for this quarter not show up, but you are free to resubmit it next quarter. Take the time to work on your Proof of Concept draft as the more complete your draft is, the more likely you will be able to secure a spot.
We have an automated system so those that have been scheduled for a slot will be contacted two weeks prior to their assigned date to provide us with a draft of their submission. If their submission does not meet the standard of quality we expect, then we will work with the submitter to reach an acceptable final draft. If you cannot be reached within a week of the submission date we will contact the backup for their submission to go on that date.
This list is subject to change should people drop out or swap their characteteam.

2020.09.10 18:29 nickyv917 The 2001 NASCAR Cup season played out like a movie

Tin foil hat mode engaged
2001 started out about as terribly as possible with the death of a legend, and while I don’t actually believe that NASCAR can actually script a race (otherwise Danica would won a ton races, and Dale Jr would have as many titles as his dad), if I were to write out a bunch of major set pieces for how I'd make the 2001 season go for maximum feel-good moments, it would look a lot like how it actually turned out.
After the 500 came Rockingham, and in the 1st race back, Steve Park in the 1(!) car (an Earnhardt car) got his only win on an oval. Park had run pretty well at The Rock before, scoring a top ten in both of his starts there in 2000, but still only oval win. Also in this race, Dale Jr was in a crash that looked eerily similar to his dads.
Next week, Las Vegas. Winner: Jeff Gordon, Earnhardt's biggest rival. Not that surprising, but its worth noting that 2001 was his only Las Vegas win, and he only averaged a 15th place finish in Sin City.
Next week, Atlanta. Kevin Harvick's first career win, a photo finish with Jeff Gordon. Not only in his 3(!!!)rd career start, but in a mirror image to Earnhardt's win at Atlanta almost exactly one year ago, where just edged out Bobby Labonte.
EDIT: Andy Petree Racing was another team that was technically under the Earnhardt bubble, as their partnership with DEI and RCR helped them dominate the plate tracks. And sure enough, in the spring Dega race, Bobby Hamilton scored APR's first win in that beautiful Square D #55. Coincidentally, that #55 pushed Dale Sr. to his final win at Dega, albeit with Kenny Wallace behind the wheel. Oh, and APR's other car, Joe Nemechek's #33 would also find Victory Lane at Rockingham's fall date.
EDIT: A race was held on what would've been Dale's 50th birthday at Fontana, and it was won by Dale's close friend, Rusty Wallace.
Dale Jr. struggled through this time, going winless through the first 16 races, and finding himself outside the top 10 in points heading into Daytona. So what better time to score his first win of the season at the track that claimed his father? And the guy who won the 500, Michael Waltrip pushed him to the victory.
EDIT: When 9/11 happened, the country needed a hero. The world needed a hero. And that hero was Dale Earnhardt Jr. The New Hampshire race was postponed, and next week was Dover, and Junior dominated, leading the most laps and winning the first race post 9/11.
Later that year, Junior won the fall Talladega race, one year after Senior's final career win at Dega, and in the process, won the No Bull 5 Million Dollar Bonus, again a year after his dad did it.
EDIT: Another driver who needed a glimmer of hope was Bill Elliott. His last win came in 1994, and he had a record-setting 226 race winless streak, most of which came in his self-owned #94 car. But at Homestead in October, driving for Ray Evernham's newly formed Dodge brigade, Elliott passed teammate Casey Atwood late to claim his first win in more than seven years.
Finally at the season finale at New Hampshire, the 31 car, Earnhardt's teammate got into victory lane, albeit not with the person who was in the 31 was Dale was around, Mike Skinner. Instead, Robby Gordon would pilot the #31 Lowe's car to victory lane, and like with Steve Park, this was his only win on an oval.
In the end, Jeff Gordon would run away with the title, his fourth in seven years, but by the end of the season, all five full time teams under the DEI or RCR umbrella would score a victory (all seven if you include APR), including some pretty unlikely winners, like Hamilton, Nemechek, Robby Gordon, Ward Burton, Ricky Craven, and Elliott Sadler in the 21.
EDIT: Thanks for all the extra little bits of trivia, this is really expanding what was originally just a couple of tidbits of data.

2020.08.02 01:00 Angel466 [Bob the hobo] A Celestial Wars Spin-Off Part 0116

ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN
The second Sam was out the door, Lucas lost all sense of playfulness and turned on his roommate. “And since when did you wear rings?”
Robbie never wore rings. Ever. It was perhaps the only piece of jewellery that he flat refused to wear; the reason for which once again went back to that perverted bastard rotting in jail. Robbie had been bought a ring for his fourteenth birthday but was told it had been done so the entire world would know who he really belonged to. Robbie hated that ring, and after everything came to light, he’d made it very clear he’d never wear another ring again.
“Since today. It was a gift and I like it.”
“From who?”
“Mason’s surgeon.”
This just got weirder and weirder for Lucas. “Do you know her?”
Robbie turned and went back into the kitchen, with Lucas hot on his heels.
“Don’t turn away from me when I asked you a question!”
“Is that what you were doing?” Robbie asked from inside what looked like a full-length cupboard door that turned out to be the fridge. He pulled out a beer and tossed it to Lucas. “For a second there, it looked as if you thought you were still at work.”
Lucas cracked open the beer and took a mouthful, using the cool brew to take his attitude down a notch while Robbie pulled a covered bowl of what appeared to be taco mince from the fridge. “Is Charlie coming over?”
Robbie’s eyes widened for a fraction of a second but then went back to normal. “How’d you know?”
Lucas flicked his finger at the bowl, then at the brew in his hand. “Tacos and beer are two of her favourite things. How come you didn’t tell me she was coming over?”
“Because you promised me this morning you’d be home by seven at the latest, so I lined up with her to come over at eight to watch the football game between the Eagles and the Giants that we missed last weekend.”
“Why? The Eagles got trounced.”
Robbie’s expression turned nasty. “Do you know that for a fact?”
Lucas’ right shoulder hitched. “The Giants are a better team, and always will be.”
“Ahh – so you’re projecting. That, I can live with.”
With the beer still in his hand, Lucas ignored the bar seats and leaned into the counter, supporting his upper body with his forearms across the blue marble top. “You really don’t see any of this as weird, do you?” he asked, taking another deep sip of beer.
Robbie pulled out a skillet from a cupboard and placed it on one of the rear induction rings, while his other hand ran seamlessly over the control panel of an oven, bringing it to life. He added a splash of oil to the skillet and went back to the cupboard to remove a flat baking tray and pulled out the packet of premade taco shells that he removed the plastic of and lay across the baking tray with the cardboard insert still in place.
Lucas continued to watch him as he flicked a wet finger at the skillet and left it once more. There was no hesitation in his movements. None. This was to be expected in the kitchen they’d all shared for years, but this was a brand new, ultra-modern kitchen, with controls and gauges that Robbie would never have seen before in his life! And he was using them like he was Gordon Ramsay or Jaimie Oliver!
“When did you learn to do that?” Lucas asked.
Just then, the water in the skillet began to hiss against the heated oil, so Robbie took up the bowl of taco mince and returned to the hotplate, lifting the skillet, and rolling it to coat the bottom in oil. “Do what?” he asked, fiddling once more with the controls which had the range hood rumble to life. Adding the mince blend to the skillet caused a strong sizzle that was caught by the overhead vent.
“That,” Lucas insisted, pointing at the oven. “Since when did you know how to use a range hood?”
“Doesn’t everyone?”
Lucas took another swig. “Nope.” He continued to watch as Robbie pulled out a flat wooden spoon from a drawer and stirred the mince. “I don’t like it, man,” he stated.
Robbie paused to look at him. “Like what?”
Lucas lifted his free hand to do a circular motion with one finger. “You, Sam, all of this … it’s like I’ve woken up in the fucking Twilight Zone.”
“So if someone walked through that door and offered you a free Porsche, you’d knock it back?”
Yes, Robbie, the devious little shit, had gone there. Porsches were by far Lucas’ favourite car in the world. “I’d wanna see a legitimate paper-trail of ownership and be told just what was expected of me in exchange for it first.”
“And if you knew for a fact that the source of the money was Nascerdios?”
“That doesn’t explain everything.” He took another mouthful and turned his head to look at the open space that hadn’t existed when he left that morning. “I don’t care how much money you’ve got. No one pulls this off in a few hours.” He pointed to the perfectly smooth ceiling overhead. “That was all structural, to hold up the seven other floors above it. The reinforcements needed to take those walls down alone would’ve taken a couple of days, and that’s not including the finishes. Yet I’m not smelling any fresh paint. Are you?”
“You suddenly a builder now?”
“Isn’t everyone?” Lucas shot back, cuttingly. “Seriously though, Boyd’ll be all over this for sure when he gets home tomorrow. But in the meantime, I’m telling you, we’ve spent years listening to what goes into a building’s construction. No way in the world could this be pulled off in a matter of hours. It’s just not possible.”
Robbie released the wooden spoon to roll both hands skyward. “And yet here we are.”
Lucas went back to drinking his beer. “I know, and that’s my whole point.”
“How does Sam fit into your Twilight Zone equation?”
Another mouthful. “He’s rich, well-dressed and has a date tonight. I think I could handle any one of them, but all three within the same time frame as this apartment makeover?” Lucas shook his head. “I mean, has anyone actually shown him how to apply a condom?”
Robbie snickered. “He’ll work it out, and if Gerry’s in his class, chances are she’s not a virgin. Not too many twenty-plus-year-old virgins left in the world, and that’s even if it goes that far. Sam’s been freaking out for days at the thought of going to a movie with her, and his first thought about ‘protection’ when you mentioned it was the gun-wielding kind. You’re panicking about nothing.”
“I hope so.”
“So what’s your problem with me, apart from the fact that I know my way around a kitchen better than you?”
“How do you know Doctor Nascerdios?”
“I don’t … didn’t.”
“Yet out of the blue, she gives you a gold ring that you’re suddenly all too happy to wear when you swore off rings years ago.”
At least Robbie had the grace to look at the ring before meeting Lucas’ eyes once more and shrugging. “I like it, Lucas. I don’t know why I do, but I just do. Can’t you just leave it at that?”
Lucas put down the beer and beckoned Robbie over with a flick of his fingertips. “C’mere, Rob. I want to have a better look at it.”
Robbie curled that hand into a fist and hid is behind his back. “You’re not getting it off me, man. It’s mine.”
“I’m not taking it off you, dipshit,” Lucas promised, slapping his hand on the counter. “C’mon, Rob! Don’t make me come to you, or I’ll put you in a headlock like I used to back at Mom and Dad’s when we were in high school and mess up your pretty hair.”
With Lucas’ half-assed promise, Robbie gave the mince a parting stir, then left the wooden spoon in the skillet and went over to him. “I think the reason I like it is, it is so plain and simple,” he said, placing his hand on the counter in front of Lucas’ arms. “There’s no marks on it or anything, yet it’s gorgeous.”
Lucas wouldn’t go that far, but it was certainly a very basic, rose gold ring worth maybe a few hundred dollars.
From a Nascerdios.
The officer twisted his lips to one side suspiciously. That was way too cheap for a Nascerdios band … unless …
He reached out and took Robbie by the wrist. “Don’t move,” he warned as Robbie flexed within the hold. “I just want to try something.”
Something he’d only ever seen with Sam.
He touched four ‘corners’ of the ring face and watched in amazement as it warped and spread out into a rose gold dress ring.
“Holy shi…” Robbie’s eyes bugged out of his head, and Lucas was sure his were doing likewise. But just to put the final nail in the coffin, he covered the face of dress ring with his palm, and when he removed it, the Nascerdios crest filled the blank space.
Robbie and Lucas stared at each other, both swallowing heavily in shock.

2020.07.30 00:21 HonestMission An LGBTQ culture and media starter pack (not a question; LONG list of recommendations)

Hi! I've recently noticed that there has been several posts from gaybros who seem to feel really disconnected from and disengaged with the LGBTQ community. That's understandable, especially when these uncertain times mean that most people aren't in a good frame of mind or at their best.
Seeing that we're all socially distancing, and perhaps still under some form of lockdown, I thought that it would be a good idea to post a (warning: LONG) reading/watching/listening list, given that some of us have plenty of spare time on our hands. I hope that you enjoy discovering something new!
I love many items, and care a lot less for others, but I've tried to approach this objectively. Some music suggestions, btw, aren't by LGBTQ artists, but all of them have appealed varyingly to our community. I've also omitted the really obvious stuff, such as Brokeback Mountain, Madonna and Will & Grace etc.
Feel free to contribute and add your own favourites! A special thanks goes to my good friend, u/Manor4548, for getting the ball rolling with his excellent suggestions. Also, if our excellent mods feel that this post in inappropriate, I'm more than happy to remove it. Please take care and stay safe!

Bob & Rose (2001) - acclaimed yet short-lived British comedy-drama series, from the creator of Queer As Folk, about an openly gay male school teacher who starts a relationship with a woman
Boy Meets Girl (2015-2016) - realistic enough yet very slight BBC sitcom about a 26-year-old man who falls in love with a 40-year-old trans woman
The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy (2000) - likeable, peppy, relatable, upbeat and generally unproblematic "slice of life" movie, about a gay friendship group, from the director of the problematic and overrated Love, Simon; co-stars John Mahoney, Dean Cain and a young Zach Braff
Dead Poets Society (1989) and School Ties (1992) - deeply homoerotic prep school movies
Edge Of Seventeen (1998) - arguably the most realistic coming out movie ever made, although the emphasis is firmly on the "coming of age" side of things
End Of The Century (2019) - 30-something Argentine holiday romance, which is heavily inspired by Before Sunrise and set in Barcelona
Happy Endings (2011-2013) - underrated 20-something American sitcom, with a loveable co-protagonist that's undoubtedly a beacub
Gaycation (2016-2017) - global travel documentary series, co-presented by Ellen Page, which has an LGBTQ slant
Grandma's House (2010-2012) - naturalistic BBC sitcom about a gay son and his Jewish family
Jeffrey (1995) - subversive AIDS-themed romantic comedy which, despite an outstanding supporting performance from Patrick Stewart that really should have garnered an Oscar nomination, is flawed and an acquired taste
Latter Days (2003) and The Falls (2012) - ultra low-budget romantic dramas about gay Mormons, but ultimately more pandemic-friendly than the conversion therapy drama Boy Erased (2018)
Longtime Companion (1989) and The Normal Heart (2014) - emotional and touching dramas about the HIV-AIDS crisis in NYC; Matt Bomer and Jim Parsons' performances in the latter merit special praise
Love Is Strange (2014) - 60-something romantic drama about discrimination and family, starring John Lithgow and Alfred Molina
Love, Valour, Compassion (1997) - melodramatic comedy-drama about a 40-something gay friendship group, although this one is a bitchier and snarkier watch than The Broken Hearts Club; features a star turn from Jason Alexander as a dying HIV-AIDS patient
Maurice (1987) - excellent period drama adaptation of EM Forster's novel; co-stars a young Hugh Grant
A Moment In The Reeds (2017) - romantic drama where a Finnish man bonds with a Syrian asylum seeker at a lakehouse
My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) - pioneering British comedy-drama that critiques racism and Thatcherism, among other things, with a prominent gay subplot; co-stars a young Daniel Day-Lewis
My Own Private Idaho (1991) - surreal road trip drama, partially based on Shakespeare's Henry IV and Henry V, about street hustlers; directed by Gus Van Sant, and starring Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix
Mysterious Skin (2004) - dark, difficult and uncompromising independent drama about the effect of historic sexual abuse on a gay teenage hustler; stars a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt
1985 (2018) - excellent monochrome drama about a closeted and dying man with HIV-AIDS, who is trying to come out to his conservative and suburban family at Christmas
Ocean Waves (1993) - underrated and accidentally queer TV movie from Studio Ghibli; if you don't mind spoilers, then this YouTube video comprehensively explains why Ocean Waves is accidentally queer
Open To Question: Justin Fashanu (1992) - Justin Fashanu, the first openly gay professional soccer player and first black player to command a £1m transfer fee, is interviewed on a Q&A programme for young people; it has been archived online by the BBC as an important historical document
Outland (2012) and Please Like Me (2013-2016) - two Australian comedy series; the former is about five members of an LGBTQ sci-fi club and the latter is about a newly out millennial slacker (which co-stars Pippa from Home & Away!)
Pain & Glory (2019) - Pedro Almodóvar's most recent and arguably most accomplished movie
Paris Is Burning (1990) - important long-form BIPOC/BAME documentary about NYC ballroom culture
Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert (1994) - inspired road trip comedy about three Australian drag queens
Queer Britain (2017) - excellent BBC youth documentary series about LGBTQ issues in Britain, with episodes dedicated to religion, body image, homelessness, racism, porn, and queer identity
Self-Portrait in 23 Rounds: A Chapter In David Wojnarowicz's Life, 1989-1991 (2018) and Keith Haring: Street Art Boy (2020) - long-form documentaries about two iconic gay artists, who died from HIV
Shelter (2007) - cute yet slight low-budget drama about gay self-discovery in the American suburbs
Sum Of Us (1994) - thoroughly affable Australian comedy-drama about a gay son and his accepting father; co-stars a young and pre-fame Russell Crowe
Tales Of The City series (1993, 1998, 2001, 2019) - TV adaptation of seminal gay novel and its sequels
A Taste of Honey (1961) - monochrome kitchen sink dramedy, with a gay male supporting character, which is set in Manchester
Tofu (2015) - short-form web documentary series, from the creator of Queer As Folk, which explores modern attitudes towards sex, with a heavy emphasis on the LGBTQ side of it
Trick (1999) - please take this idealistic overnight romance with a pinch of salt - even if it realistically tackles internalised homophobia in a way that Love, Simon never managed to do - but this superb dramedy is still one of the best and most pandemic-friendly gay movies
The Outs (2012-2013, 2016) - largely realistic and utterly charming web drama about gay adulting in NYC, with a peerless soundtrack; I low-key stan the loveable Jack and Scruffy
Verbotene Liebe (2007-2013) - surprisingly good supercouple plot from a German soap opera, involving a bisexual amateur boxer turned horse trainer, Christian, and his boyfriend/husband, Oliver
The Way He Looks (2014) - cute Brazilian teen romance about blindness and self-discovery
The Wedding Banquet (1993) - Oscar-nominated romantic comedy from China, directed by Ang Lee
Weekend (2011) - minimalist and naturalistic weekend romance, set in the outskirts of Nottingham
Wild Reeds (1994) - Cannes-nominated sexual awakening teen drama, set in early '60s France
Music

Northern Star by Melanie C (1999) - British equivalent of Madonna's seminal Ray Of Light (1998)
Blue Bell Knoll (1988) and Heaven Or Las Vegas (1990) by Cocteau Twins - pioneering ambient dream-pop, which are perhaps the ideal albums for jerk-off sessions and physical intimacy
Doppelgänger by Curve (1992) - a gothic, melodramatic and moody fusion of shoegaze and industrial electronica; fans of Garbage will LOVE this album
No Angel by Dido (1999) - another album that's ideal for masturbation and sex
Disgraceful by Dubstar (1995) - slightly out of time, albeit still excellent, synth-pop from the mid '90s
Chorus by Erasure (1991) - analogue-based synth-pop; will interest those into video game soundtracks, given that it practically sounds like music from Amiga titles at various points
Amplified Heart by Everything But The Girl (1994) - eloquent fusion of acoustic folk-pop and electronica; Tracey Thorn's Record (2018) further consolidated her appeal to the LGBTQ community
Sue (1989) and Ray (1991) by Frazier Chorus - arty and gentle woodwind-based synth-pop that also has the bitchiest and most subversive lyrics imaginable
Chemistry by Girls Aloud (2005) and Emotion by Carly Rae Jepsen (2015) - bubblegum pop artists that throw curveballs by unexpectedly moving into indie-baiting dance-pop territory
Black Cherry by Goldfrapp (2003), State Of Mind by Holly Valance (2003), Come & Get It by Rachel Stevens (2005) and Trip The Light Fantastic by Sophie Ellis-Bextor (2007) - highly regarded electropop albums from the mid-2000s

The Death Of Cool by Kitchens Of Distinction (1992), Copper Blue by Sugar (1992), The Sound Of McAlmont & Butler by McAlmont & Butler (1995), D-D-Don't Stop The Beat by Junior Senior (2002), The Smell Of Our Own by The Hidden Cameras (2003), i by The Magnetic Fields (2004) and Silent Alarm by Bloc Party (2005) - indie bands that are fronted/co-fronted by openly gay men
Thinking It Over by Liberty X (2002) - surprisingly good R&B-led pop from talent show runner-ups
Crooked Mile by Microdisney (1987) - includes Rack, one of the most articulate songs ever written about AIDS; the same applies to It Couldn't Happen Here from Actually by Pet Shop Boys (1987)
Light Years by Kylie Minogue (2000) - perhaps the most cohesive introduction to the Australian queen
Loveless by My Bloody Valentine (1991) - Mysterious Skin undoubtedly proves that shoegaze has LGBTQ appeal, although this is challenging stuff and not for the faint-hearted
Passive Soul by Orlando (1997) - fragile and wallflowery pop that puts a heavy slant on the eclectic

Original Soundtrack by S-Express (1989) - one of the first UK house music albums to have originated from LGBTQ nightclubs
Foxbase Alpha (1991), So Tough (1993) and Tales From Turnpike House (2005) by Saint Etienne - summery indie-dance cultural love letters to London; Pedro Almodóvar is a big fan of them
Hormonally Yours by Shakespeares Sister (1992) - gothic, melodramatic, sassy and vampy glam pop-rock
We Are Shampoo by Shampoo (1994) and On The Loose by Deuce (1995) - unashamedly trashy bubblegum pop; the latter band was created by former Pet Shop Boys manager Tom Watkins

2020.04.03 20:12 Ex__ Quarantainment Suggestion: Movies that take place in Los Angeles

EDIT: If something is missing, check the edits first.
Hello all! I don't know about the rest of this town, but I sure do enjoy movies. In this post I'm going to share a list of movies that:
A.) Are watchable, possibly even entertaining.
B.) Take place in Los Angeles. Some may simply have just a scene or two in Los Angeles whereas others are fully written for a Los Angeles setting. Some may even be fictional locations that were neverless filmed in and highly resemble the Los Angeles area.
Most of these are mainstream movies so no real gems in this list, but I encourage others to contribute in the comments. I realize that not everyone has watched everything, so I'll provide insight that assumes you haven't seen the film yet.

Movies that take place in a non-fictional Los Angeles setting

Movies that partially take place in Los Angeles

Movies that take place in a fictionalized Los Angeles

Thats it for my list. Don't feel like proofreading it, so I apologize for any grammatical errors. Be aware that I can't think of or remember EVERYTHING. Also this isn't meant to be an encyclopedic list, so there are some films I left off intentionalyl ebcause I didn't feel they were what I considered watchable. That being said, I'll edit in any film that's commented below, but don't blame me if you watch it and it sucks ass.
EDIT:
Swimming With Sharks (1994) - Another one I forgot. Stars 90s Kevin Spacey and Brett from Pulp Fiction. Decent watch, if not a bit over the top with the ending.
Up in Smoke (1978) - The original stoner comedy. Stars the comedy duo Cheech and Chong. Excellent watch and they do a good performance of Earache My Eye. In fact, the entire soundtrack is dope. Definitely worth a watch.
Car Wash (1976) - Solid comedy, stars Richard Pryor, and spawned the song of the same titled that charted heavily in the 70s. Had a really stupid remake that I think Aftermath records produced named The Wash that is not at all worth mentioning further.
Set It Off (1996) - A bank heist film on the surface, but really the black woman's answer to Thelma and Louise. Stars Jada Pinkett-Smith, Vivica A. Fox, and Queen Latifah as a lesbian waaaaaaay before she officially came out.
u/Cribbit has further decreed that Bosch (Amazon Prime) and Barry (HBO) are further required watching for continued Los Angeles residency.
